Christian Watson Leaves by Ambulance and Returns From Hospital to Help the Packers Beat the Panthers 27-19

A Green Bay Packers wide receiver catches a touchdown pass in the end zone

Christian Watson was taken from Lambeau Field by ambulance during the Green Bay Packers’ 27-19 win over the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night, examined at a local hospital, cleared, and returned to the field before the end of the game in one of the more remarkable sequences of the NFL season.

The result moved Green Bay to 5-3 and dropped Carolina to 3-4, but the night was defined less by the scoreline than by the sight of a receiver who had left in an ambulance running back out of the tunnel to rejoin his team.

Hurt, Hospitalised, and Back by the Third Quarter

Watson was injured in the second quarter after catching a deep pass from Jordan Love and landing awkwardly. He had 100 yards to his name at that point, and the concern was immediate: he was taken to hospital after coughing up blood, leaving the stadium by ambulance while the game continued.

Doctors examined his chest, cleared him, and he made his way back to Lambeau in the passenger seat of the ambulance. He was in the building and back on the field by the end of the third quarter, and with 2:33 to play he caught a seven-yard pass on third-and-two that helped Green Bay run down the clock. He finished with eight receptions for 113 yards.

Love described the moment he realised his receiver had returned.

“Man, that was crazy. It was a lot of people cheering. Stuff was going on,” the quarterback said. “I didn’t know what was happening. Then I see Christian running out, and he’s just resurrected. It was great to see him.”

Matt LaFleur praised the decision to go back in. “The grit to go back in the game, he had a heck of a night,” the head coach said, adding that he “can’t imagine what he would’ve had had he not missed so much time.”

Love and Jacobs Carry the Offence

Green Bay had built enough of a lead to absorb the disruption. Love completed 30 of 41 passes for 288 yards and three touchdowns against one interception, finding Tucker Kraft from 12 yards, Matthew Golden from 24 and Josh Jacobs from four. Jacobs also ran in a one-yard score, giving him two touchdowns on a night when he carried 21 times for 39 yards and added six catches.

Golden finished with seven receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown. The only blemish on the scoring was a missed extra point from Trey Smack. Green Bay led 20-10 at the interval and stretched it to 27-10 midway through the third quarter before Carolina found some late life.

Carolina’s Rally Comes Up Short

The Panthers made the fourth quarter uncomfortable, outgaining Green Bay 109 yards to 32 in the period, but they could not complete the comeback. Bryce Young went 23 of 41 for 209 yards with a touchdown and an interception while being sacked six times and hit nine, and his fourth-and-five throw from midfield with 2:41 left fell incomplete.

Chuba Hubbard was Carolina’s most productive player, running 22 times for 81 yards and a touchdown and catching seven passes for 38 yards, while Tetairoa McMillan added six catches for 58 yards and Ryan Fitzgerald kicked field goals of 39 and 50 yards. Green Bay out-gained the Panthers 354 total yards to 258 across the night.

The Packers return to action having survived both a determined opponent and a genuine scare to one of their most important players. Carolina, having pushed the game to the final minutes, leave with a fourth defeat in seven.
