White Sox Extend AL Central Lead Over Guardians in Baseball's Tightest Race
The Chicago White Sox have extended their lead in the American League Central to a game and a half, beating the Cleveland Guardians 7-3 at Progressive Field in the opening game of the sides' final series of the season.
The win also secured the head-to-head tiebreaker. Chicago have taken the season series 7-4 with two games remaining, meaning Cleveland cannot pass them on that measure should the teams finish level.
A Lead That Nearly Disappeared
The result arrested a slide that had threatened to cost Chicago the division.
They led by two games a week ago before going 1-4, and woke up Monday just half a game clear. The longer trend was worse. Across the previous month Chicago went 14-14, and the Guardians had won six of their last ten to Chicago's three.
Monday's win restored some order. Chicago now have ten games left and Cleveland nine, with two of those coming against each other before the sides part for the season.
The underlying numbers offer Chicago some reassurance. Their lineup has been the more productive of the two by a clear margin, with Miguel Vargas the most effective hitter on either roster this year and Munetaka Murakami and Colson Montgomery also contributing. The concern has been the rotation, which has been the weaker half of the team all season.
Cleveland will start left-hander Parker Messick in Wednesday's finale.
A Turnaround Few Saw Coming
What makes the race remarkable is where Chicago have come from. The White Sox lost 121 games in 2024, the most in modern major league history, and followed it with 102 defeats in 2025. Two years on they are leading their division in the middle of September.
Cleveland, by contrast, have been a fixture at the top of the Central, winning it in 2024 and 2025 and six times in the past decade. Their 2026 season has included a franchise milestone of its own, with a win over the San Diego Padres in August becoming the 10,000th regular-season victory in club history. They are the third American League team to reach that mark.
Wild Card Implications
The Guardians have a safety net. They currently hold the last wild card spot in the American League, a game clear of the Toronto Blue Jays, who lost 6-5 to Detroit on Monday.
That keeps a postseason route open even if the division slips away, though the seeding difference matters. A division title brings a more favourable path than a wild card berth, where the best-of-three opening series begins on 29 September.
Four teams have already secured postseason places, with the Tampa Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees all through. The Brewers clinched the National League Central on Tuesday.
The regular season ends on 27 September, with the Division Series scheduled to begin on 3 October.
