Luka Doncic Scores 52 as the Lakers Erase an 18-Point Deficit to Beat the Jazz 132-123

Luka Doncic scored 52 points as the Los Angeles Lakers recovered from an 18-point first-quarter deficit to beat the Utah Jazz 132-123 in Salt Lake City, moving to 3-0 to begin the season.

It was the first 50-point game of the NBA season and the tenth of Doncic’s career, and it came with eight rebounds, ten assists and two steals in just over 38 minutes.

A First Quarter That Should Have Settled It

The Lakers were comprehensively outplayed for twelve minutes. Utah led 47-29 at the end of the opening quarter, scoring 16 second-chance points and collecting six offensive rebounds in that period alone, and the margin was a fair reflection of how thoroughly Los Angeles were being beaten on the glass.

Doncic’s response was gradual rather than immediate. He had 25 points by half-time and hit a three late in the second quarter that put the Lakers 74-71 in front, completing a swing of more than 20 points across a single quarter.

Austin Reaves was central to that recovery and had not scored at all in the first quarter. He finished with 29 points, 15 of them in the second, along with four assists, two blocks and a steal. Collin Sexton added 13 off the bench.

Doncic was blunt about what had preceded it. “We cannot start games like this anymore,” he said.

Thirteen in the Fourth to Close It Out

Utah did not fall away after half-time, and the game was still live entering the final quarter. Doncic scored 13 points in it, going three of four from three-point range, and the Jazz had no answer once he began taking and making those shots.

His overall shooting was 17 of 30 from the field and eight of 18 from beyond the arc, numbers that reflect volume as much as efficiency and a night on which he was willing to take whatever the defence offered.

Walker Kessler, playing in Utah for the first time since leaving, had a quiet return with two points, seven rebounds and a block.

Coach JJ Redick described a player who becomes a different proposition once a game reaches a certain pitch. When Doncic is in the flow state, Redick said, “he gets into ‘Showman Mode.’”

Redick also pointed to the defensive end, which has been the longest-running criticism of Doncic’s game, and said the defensive version of his guard emerged as the night went on.

Reaves put it more simply. “I think he’s always ready to get a bucket,” he said.

The Fastest to 3,000 Points in Lakers History

The individual markers accumulated quickly. Doncic passed 3,000 regular-season points as a Laker in his 95th game for the franchise, the fastest anyone has reached that figure in its history, beating a mark set by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 109 games.

It was also his 19th 40-point game for Los Angeles, which moves him past LeBron James into sixth on the franchise list, and his third 50-point game for the club, tying James for fifth-most.

One of the night’s marks had no precedent at all. No player in Lakers history had previously recorded at least 50 points, ten assists, five rebounds and five made three-pointers in the same game.

Three Wins From Three to Open the Post-LeBron Era

The result extends a perfect start for a team whose shape has changed significantly, and the manner of it matters as much as the record. Winning on the road after conceding 47 points in a quarter suggests a side capable of absorbing a bad opening without losing the game outright.

The schedule does not slow down. Los Angeles host the Portland Trail Blazers next, looking for a fourth straight win, and will do so knowing that the first-quarter problems Doncic identified have not yet cost them anything.
