Gill Hits Fastest Double Century in ODI History as India Chase Down 406
Shubman Gill produced one of the great one-day international innings in Guwahati, making an unbeaten 223 from 133 balls to carry India to a successful chase of 406 against West Indies.
Gill reached his double century from 117 deliveries, the fastest in the history of the format, and India won by eight wickets with 39 balls to spare.
Records in Every Direction
The innings rewrote several marks at once. Gill's 200 came 17 balls quicker than Ishan Kishan's previous best of 126 against Bangladesh at Chattogram in 2022.
His hundred arrived from 62 balls, the fastest by an India captain, beating Rohit Sharma's 63-ball effort against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup. He reached 150 from 89 balls, also an Indian record, and finished with 26 fours and eight sixes at a strike rate above 167.
It is the highest individual score made in a successful ODI run chase, and the third-highest in the format overall behind Sharma's 264 and Martin Guptill's 237 not out. Gill becomes only the second batter after Sharma to make multiple ODI double centuries, and only the second after Glenn Maxwell to make one while chasing.
Sharma contributed 101 of his own and passed 12,000 career ODI runs. Their opening stand of 255 from 158 balls is the second highest by an India pair.
West Indies Make History and Still Lose
The remarkable part is that West Indies had done almost everything right. Batting first, they posted 405 for 7, the first time they have passed 400 in one-day international cricket.
Three of their batters made centuries. John Campbell hit 101 from 68 balls, Amir Jangoo 114 from 77 and captain Shai Hope 104 from 94, putting them in the small group of sides to have three centurions in a single ODI innings.
India then reached 400 inside 43 overs, matching England against Australia at Nottingham in 2018 as the fastest any team has got there in men's one-day cricket.
The match produced 811 runs in total, the third-highest aggregate in ODI history, and five individual centuries.
Second Only to Johannesburg
Only one higher chase has ever been completed. South Africa's 438 for 9 against Australia at the Wanderers in 2006 remains the benchmark, and that one went to the final over. India had 6.3 overs in hand.
It is Gill's 11th ODI hundred, his second in consecutive matches of this series and his third in a row at home. He is the fastest India batter to reach 11 centuries in the format and third fastest in the world behind Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock.
Virat Kohli, who made 139 not out in the opening match of the series on his way to becoming the second man to 15,000 ODI runs, was dismissed during the chase.
India lead the three-match series 2-0 with the final game still to play.
