Miller's Career-Best 142 Seals ODI Series for South Africa Against Australia

David Miller produced the highest score of his one-day international career as South Africa beat Australia by 32 runs at the Wanderers, sealing the series with a match to spare.

His 142 from 93 balls, alongside a century from captain Temba Bavuma, carried South Africa to 365 for 9. Australia were bowled out for 333 in the final over.

From 93 for 3 to 365

The innings began badly for the hosts. Aiden Markram fell to the first ball of the match, caught off Josh Hazlewood for a duck, and Quinton de Kock followed with the score on 36. When Matthew Breetzke departed for 34, South Africa were 93 for 3.

Bavuma and Miller then added 156 for the fourth wicket. The captain, who survived a missed run-out on 32 and a dropped catch on 33 and took a heavy blow to his right arm, made 103 from 116 balls.

Miller was the more destructive, striking 12 fours and nine sixes at a strike rate above 150 and taking a particular liking to the off side. It was his eighth ODI hundred and beat his previous best.

Australia were badly hampered when Nathan Ellis suffered a side injury and bowled only four overs. Jack Edwards took the burden, finishing with 5 for 67, while Hazlewood took 3 for 70.

Australia's Chase Falls Short

Chasing 366, Australia made a flying start through an opening stand of 130 between Mitchell Marsh and Cooper Connolly. Marsh and Travis Head both made 84, Marsh from 23 fewer balls.

The spinners then took over. Keshav Maharaj removed Matt Renshaw, who made 32 and was the only middle-order batter to look settled, and South Africa's slow bowlers conceded 133 from 17 overs while breaking the innings open.

Xavier Bartlett gave the chase late life with 50 from 28 balls including five sixes, but Australia had left themselves too much to do. They were dismissed with a ball remaining, 32 short of what would have been a record chase.

Six Series in a Row

The result gives South Africa a sixth consecutive bilateral ODI series win over Australia, following their 67-run victory in the opening match in Durban.

It also represented the fifth-highest total ever defended at the Wanderers, in front of a full house for the ground's pink day.

Australia elected to field first and were without Pat Cummins. South Africa made four changes to the side that won in Durban.

For Australia the concerns extend beyond a single defeat. Their spinners were taken apart for the second match running, and the loss of Ellis mid-innings left an attack already without Cummins badly stretched.

The third and final match takes place on Wednesday at JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom.
