Antonelli Wins Inaugural Madrid Grand Prix as Safety Car Timing Denies Norris
Kimi Antonelli has won the Spanish Grand Prix at Madrid's new Madring circuit, taking his eighth victory of the season after a virtual safety car wrecked pole-sitter Lando Norris's race.
The Mercedes driver finished 4.3 seconds clear of Max Verstappen, with Norris third. The result extends Antonelli's lead in the drivers' championship over Norris to 81 points.
Norris Caught Out
Norris had controlled the opening stint. He held the lead from pole through a messy first corner, where both Antonelli and Verstappen ran wide and cut the chicane, and built a comfortable advantage over the field.
The race turned on a single piece of timing. When a virtual safety car was deployed, Norris had just passed the pit entry and was unable to take advantage of the cheap stop available to those behind him. He pitted a lap later, and a slow tyre change dropped him behind both Antonelli and Verstappen.
Antonelli was candid about how the win arrived. "Lucky for the virtual safety car, feel a bit bad for Lando," he said on the radio after the chequered flag. He returned to the theme afterwards.
"It doesn't feel as good because I think Lando today deserved to win," he said. "But overall, you know, we'll take it."
It was a very different afternoon to the previous weekend at Monza, where Antonelli came from 19th on the grid to win in front of his home crowd after taking an engine penalty.
Leclerc's Long Game
Charles Leclerc led at halfway having not yet stopped, Ferrari gambling on a safety car or red flag that never came. The hard tyre proved more durable than Friday practice had suggested, which gave the strategy some logic, but the neutralisation Ferrari needed did not arrive.
Leclerc finally pitted on lap 49 of 57 and rejoined fourth, comfortably ahead of Russell but too far back to threaten the podium.
Behind Antonelli, Norris spent much of the closing stint trying to find a way past Verstappen, closing to within a second by lap 43 without ever getting properly alongside. Verstappen was investigated for leaving the track and gaining an advantage but the stewards took no further action.
Lewis Hamilton retired with brake problems after an earlier clash with Verstappen that left the Red Bull driver unhappy. Franco Colapinto finished seventh ahead of Oscar Piastri, with Arvid Lindblad and Nico Hulkenberg completing the points. Russell set the fastest lap on lap 48.
Questions Over the Circuit
The racing itself drew criticism. Overtaking proved close to impossible around the new street layout, with barely any wheel-to-wheel action until Piastri passed Lindblad around lap 45. Drivers spent long stretches running in formation.
Carlos Sainz called on the circuit to address blind high-speed sections. Track temperatures reached 53C at the start, and the barriers sit close throughout.
The Madring holds a contract to stage the race until the end of 2035, so the complaints will need addressing rather than avoiding.
Formula 1 now has a break before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku street circuit on 24-26 September.
