Marina Bay Hosts First Sprint as Antonelli Closes In on Maiden F1 Title

Formula 1 arrives in Singapore this weekend with Kimi Antonelli 84 points clear at the top of the drivers' championship and Marina Bay hosting a sprint for the first time.

It is the sixth and final sprint weekend of the season, and the last race of the campaign's first triple-header.

The Title Maths

Antonelli leads on 320 points, with teammate George Russell second on 236 and Lewis Hamilton third on 214. Mercedes lead the constructors' standings on 556 points from Ferrari on 405 and McLaren on 316.

The sprint format means a maximum of 33 points is available to a single driver across the weekend, so Antonelli could theoretically leave Singapore 117 clear. Even that would not be enough to settle it, because sufficient points remain across the final six rounds for Russell to recover mathematically.

The earliest Antonelli can be confirmed as champion is the United States Grand Prix in Austin later this month.

Russell's position has deteriorated. He retired from the Bahrain Grand Prix, held at Sepang in Malaysia, with an engine failure five laps from the end while running near the front, a result that allowed Antonelli to extend his advantage with a second-place finish.

Mercedes have a power unit upgrade due for Austin, which may mean Russell stays on an older unit here rather than taking a new one a race early and risking a grid penalty.

Hamilton sits 22 points behind Russell in the fight for second, with a sprint and a grand prix available to close that gap.

A Compressed Weekend

The sprint format leaves teams a single hour of practice before parc fermé conditions apply for sprint qualifying and the sprint itself. Set-ups can then be changed again before grand prix qualifying.

That is a demanding introduction at a circuit where track time matters more than most. Marina Bay measures 4.927km with 19 corners following the revisions made in 2023, and Sunday's race runs to 62 laps and 305km.

Rain is a possibility across the weekend, as it often is here.

Verstappen Arrives in Form

Max Verstappen comes to Singapore having taken his first win of the season at Sepang, and is the bookmakers' favourite this weekend. At 132 points behind Antonelli the title is beyond him, but the Red Bull has been more competitive since a significant upgrade package two races ago.

Russell won here last year from pole, finishing 0.182 seconds clear of Verstappen with Oscar Piastri third. The Singapore Grand Prix was Formula 1's original night race and remains among the most physically demanding on the calendar.

This is round 17 of 23.
