Enzo Fernandez Joins Manchester City From Chelsea in £125m Deadline Day Deal

Manchester City has completed the signing of Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for £125 million on transfer deadline day, a fee that equals the British transfer record.

The Argentina midfielder was the standout deal of a busy final day of the summer window, which closed at 11pm BST on Tuesday.

Signs Had Been There

Fernandez's departure had been signalled in the days beforehand. He was left out of Chelsea's squad for their two most recent fixtures, and manager Xabi Alonso declined to clarify his situation when asked.

The move reunites him with Enzo Maresca, who managed Fernandez during his time at Chelsea and is now at City.

It also completes a substantial reworking of City's midfield. The club had already signed Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest and Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille earlier in the window, spending heavily in the process.

City were not finished on Tuesday. They also secured Iliman Ndiaye from Everton late in the day, having earlier been linked with a move for Liverpool's Cody Gakpo that did not materialise.

From Record Signing to Record Sale

The move closes a chapter that began with Fernandez arriving in England as a record signing himself. Chelsea paid Benfica a then-British record fee of around £107 million for him in January 2023, months after he had won the World Cup with Argentina and been named the tournament's best young player.

He leaves for a fee that equals the current British record, having become a regular in the Chelsea midfield across three and a half seasons.

A Summer of Nine-Figure Fees

Fernandez became the fourth player to move to a Premier League club for more than £100 million this summer.

The others were Morgan Rogers, who joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in a deal reported at around £117 million, Bradley Barcola, who signed for Liverpool from Paris Saint-Germain in a package worth up to £123 million, and Anderson's move to City.

Chelsea have been among the most active clubs in the window across Europe, though their final day did not go entirely to plan. A move for Monaco's Lamine Camara collapsed when the French club withdrew late in the process.

The club also lost two players to Tottenham, with Mykhailo Mudryk and Tosin Adarabioyo both moving to north London. Mudryk had not played competitive football for close to two years while serving a doping ban until earlier in Augustc, and heads to the Spurs on a loan agreement which is understood to include a substantial option to buy.

Elsewhere Prior to Deadline Day

Arsenal completed a set of signings that included Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United for £75 million, Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for up to £55 million and Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen for £34.5 million.

Newcastle brought in Matias Fernandez-Pardo, while Aston Villa signed Ibrahim Mbaye. Sunderland agreed a fee with Lyon for winger Malick Fofana after Arsenal had also been linked.

Clubs that submitted a deal sheet before the deadline were given a two-hour grace period to complete outstanding paperwork, meaning several transfers were confirmed after the window had formally shut.

The window reopens on 1 January and closes on 1 February 2027.
