James Harden Agrees Three-Year, $97M Deal to Stay With Cavaliers
James Harden has agreed a new three-year, $97 million contract to remain with the Cleveland Cavaliers, resolving one of the longest-running storylines of the NBA offseason.
The deal was reported by ESPN's Shams Charania on Thursday, citing Harden's agents at Equity Sports, and subsequently confirmed by the Associated Press through two sources close to the situation. It includes a player option for the 2028-29 season and a trade kicker, and is fully guaranteed according to multiple reports.
A Two-Month Wait
The agreement follows an unusually drawn-out process. Harden declined a $42.3 million player option for the 2026-27 season in June, choosing to pursue a multi-year arrangement rather than take the one-year figure. That decision also gave Cleveland additional flexibility to work on the rest of its roster.
Harden then allowed the Cavaliers to take as long as they needed with their other offseason business before finalising his own deal. That business concluded on Wednesday, when Cleveland acquired forward Peyton Watson from the Denver Nuggets in a multi-team trade that also involved the Los Angeles Clippers. According to sources cited by ESPN, Harden played an active role in recruiting Watson during his restricted free agency.
The Cavaliers had earlier missed out on LeBron James in free agency in July, after which president Koby Altman made a series of moves to reshape the roster, including the addition of EuroLeague forward Mario Hezonja. Donovan Mitchell signed a four-year extension with the club last month.
Production and Question Marks
Harden arrived in Cleveland at the February trade deadline, moving from the Clippers in the deal that sent Darius Garland to Los Angeles. He made an immediate impact, averaging 20.5 points, 7.7 assists and 4.8 rebounds across 26 regular-season games while shooting 46.6 percent from the field and 43.5 percent from three, and the Cavaliers went 19-7 with him in the lineup.
His postseason numbers dipped. Across 18 playoff games he averaged 19.2 points and 5.5 assists, with turnovers rising to 4.7 per game. Cleveland reached the Eastern Conference Finals before being swept by the eventual champion New York Knicks.
Harden turns 37 on 26 August and enters his 18th NBA season, with the new contract running through what would be a 20th. His résumé includes the 2018 MVP award, 11 All-Star selections, eight All-NBA honours, three scoring titles and a place on the league's 75th anniversary team.
Career Earnings
Completing the contract will take Harden past $500 million in career salary earnings, a mark only a handful of players in league history have reached. He will also become the second player to sign for more than $90 million in guaranteed money at the age of 37 or older, after LeBron James.
Cleveland's projected starting lineup now reads Harden, Mitchell, Watson, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. The club lost some depth this summer with the departures of Dean Wade, Max Strus and Dennis Schroder, and enters a strengthened Eastern Conference looking to build on last season's run.
