NBA Releases Schedule for Opening Night of 2026-27 Season
The NBA has announced its opening night schedule for the 2026-27 season, setting up a three-game slate on October 20 that includes LeBron James' debut with the Philadelphia 76ers and a Western Conference Finals rematch between the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder.
The night begins with an afternoon matchup between the Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics at Little Caesars Arena, tipping off at 3 p.m. ET. Both teams finished among the Eastern Conference's top sides last season, with Detroit coming off a 60-win campaign under head coach JB Bickerstaff. The Celtics enter this season with a different look after trading All-NBA wing Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia in the offseason as part of the deal that brought Paul George to Boston.
That trade sets up the night's headline matchup. At 7 p.m. ET, Brown and newly signed free agent LeBron James will make their debuts for the 76ers on the road against the defending champion New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden, on the same night the Knicks raise their championship banner and receive their rings. It will be the first time in 53 years that a championship banner has been raised to the rafters in New York. James' arrival in Philadelphia followed a widely covered free agency process in which he also drew interest from the Cleveland Cavaliers and a potential reunion with the Miami Heat, before opting for a fresh start alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
Closing out the night at 9:30 p.m. ET, the Thunder travel to face the Spurs at the Frost Bank Center in a rematch of last season's Western Conference Finals. The matchup pairs two of the league's brightest young stars, with reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leading Oklahoma City against Victor Wembanyama and a Spurs team looking to build on last season's deep playoff run.
All three games will air nationally on NBC and Peacock, part of a broader return to national broadcast coverage for the league this season. According to ESPN insider Shams Charania, who first reported the matchups, the league had to wait on James' extended free agency decision before finalizing the schedule, but was still able to lock in all 82 games for each of the league's 30 teams by its traditional mid-August deadline.
The Celtics will also open their home schedule with a marquee matchup on October 23, hosting the Knicks in a game that doubles as center Mitchell Robinson's first appearance against his former team. Elsewhere in opening week, the league has scheduled a Miami Heat visit from Boston on October 21 as Giannis Antetokounmpo begins a new chapter with the Heat, alongside a Golden State Warriors-Los Angeles Lakers matchup the same night.
The NBA's Christmas Day schedule, revealed alongside the opening night slate, features a similar concentration of star power: a Knicks-Spurs rematch of the Finals matchup, Heat-Celtics, 76ers-Lakers marking James' return to Los Angeles, Thunder-Timberwolves, and a Nuggets-Warriors finale. The full 2026-27 regular season schedule for all 30 teams was released in the days following the opening night and Christmas Day announcements.
The season tips off October 20 and runs through mid-April, with the NBA Cup group stage beginning in November and the in-season tournament's championship game set for December 11 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis — the first time the event has been played at a college venue.
