Liverpool Sign Bradley Barcola From PSG in Deal Worth Up to £123m
Liverpool have completed the signing of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth up to £123 million, ending a transfer saga that ran for most of the summer.
The France forward has signed a five-year contract running to 2031. Liverpool will pay £106 million up front with a further £17 million available in add-ons, of which more than £100 million is guaranteed.
A Summer-Long Pursuit
Barcola had been Liverpool's primary target since the club began looking for a replacement for Mohamed Salah, who left Anfield for Turkish side Trabzonspor after nine years at the club.
Negotiations stalled repeatedly. PSG initially valued the 23-year-old at around £145 million, a figure that would have made him the most expensive signing in Premier League history. Liverpool refused to meet it, and the two clubs remained apart for several weeks before a breakthrough came in the final days of August.
The completed fee makes Barcola Liverpool's second-most expensive signing, behind the £125 million the club paid Newcastle United for Alexander Isak last summer.
Liverpool had pursued other options in the same position. A package worth around £85 million was offered to RB Leipzig for Yan Diomande in June, only for the Ivorian to join Real Madrid instead.
Why PSG Sold
Barcola had two years remaining on his contract in Paris and had made clear he would not sign an extension. He had also slipped down the pecking order following PSG's summer additions, and was left out of matchday squads in the closing weeks of the window.
He had been a significant contributor before that. Barcola played a key role as PSG won both Ligue 1 and the Champions League last season, and scored three goals in eight appearances for France at this summer's World Cup, where they finished fourth.
Primarily a left winger who can also operate on the right, he arrives at a club whose head coach Andoni Iraola had been open about the need for reinforcements in wide areas. Speaking before the deal was completed, Iraola said the club was short of numbers in that position and hoped for news soon.
What Happens Next
Barcola's arrival was expected to open the door for Cody Gakpo to leave, with both Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur interested in the Netherlands forward. Gakpo is now widely reported to be staying at Anfield.
Liverpool have continued to pursue a second winger. Talks with Brighton over Yankuba Minteh proved difficult, with two bids rejected, and attention shifted to Crystal Palace's Ismaila Sarr. Palace are reluctant to sell.
The squad remains thin in attack. Hugo Ekitike faces several more months out injured, leaving Isak as the only recognised centre forward, and Liverpool have taken two points from their opening two league fixtures with consecutive 2-2 draws.
The transfer window closes at 11pm BST on Tuesday.
