Bruno Fernandes Hat-Trick Fires Manchester United to 5-2 Win Over Ipswich
Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick as Manchester United came from behind to beat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford, handing Michael Carrick his first win of the Premier League season.
United trailed inside half an hour and faced the prospect of a second successive defeat to a newly promoted side before Fernandes took over, adding an assist for Bryan Mbeumo's late fifth goal to his three strikes.
An Uncomfortable Start
Ipswich, who beat Sunderland on their return to the top flight a week earlier, silenced Old Trafford in the 29th minute. Abdul Fatawu worked the ball down the flank and picked out Leif Davis, who struck a left-footed volley into the top corner from the edge of the area.
The goal came with United already under scrutiny. Carrick's side had lost 2-0 at Hull City on the opening weekend, a result that prompted a difficult week for the head coach and questions about the direction of the team. Speaking before the match, Carrick had pushed back on the idea that everything about his side was broken.
United responded before the interval. Marcelino Nunez lost his footing in midfield, allowing Matheus Cunha to break and feed Fernandes, who finished to level the scores. The hosts then went ahead through a Jacob Greaves own goal, with VAR checking a Harry Maguire handball in the build-up and deciding it had no bearing on the goal.
Fernandes Takes Control
Kobbie Mainoo, restored to the side after being left out at Hull, produced the moment that effectively settled the match early in the second half. The midfielder beat three Ipswich players before releasing Cunha, who won a penalty. Fernandes converted from the spot in the 60th minute for his second.
He completed the hat-trick soon after, his third in a United shirt, taking his tally to 113 goals in 330 appearances. Fernandes then set up Mbeumo in the 82nd minute for the fifth, the first time United have scored five in a Premier League match under Carrick.
Ipswich pulled a goal back late through Chuba Akpom, introduced at half-time, after Julio Enciso squared for him following a defensive lapse from Lisandro Martinez.
The performance came days after Fernandes was named PFA Players' Player of the Year, an award recognising a campaign in which he set a Premier League record with 21 assists.
Carrick Relieved
Martinez and Mainoo, both unavailable at Hull while still short of match fitness after the World Cup, were among United's better performers. Marcus Rashford was also lively on his first appearance at Old Trafford since December 2024.
Carrick said afterwards that the defeat at Hull had stung throughout the week and that his side had managed the aftermath well, while acknowledging they should not have fallen behind at home. He described the response as the kind of reaction he had been looking for, without suggesting the team has yet found its rhythm this season.
United have now won nine of their 10 Premier League matches at Old Trafford in 2026, accumulating more home points than any other side in the calendar year. Their next fixture is away at Everton on 6 September, after the transfer window closes on Tuesday. Ipswich, who had won five consecutive matches across all competitions before travelling to Manchester, host Sunderland-conquerors and fellow promoted side later in the month.
