Premier League Season Kicks Off Across England This Weekend
The 2026-27 Premier League season gets underway on Friday evening, with the opening round of fixtures spread across four days and running through to Monday night.
Defending champions Arsenal begin the campaign at home against Coventry City, kicking off at 8pm BST on Friday. It is the latest start date in Premier League history, a deliberate move by the league to give players a longer break after the FIFA World Cup, which finished in July. Pushing the opening round back by a week gave squads 89 clear days from the end of last season and 33 days from the World Cup final.
Four Days of Fixtures
Saturday brings the bulk of the action. Manchester United open away at newly promoted Hull City in the early kick-off, followed by Everton against Crystal Palace, Ipswich Town against Sunderland, and Nottingham Forest against Leeds United. Brentford host Tottenham Hotspur in a London derby later in the day.
Sunday features two afternoon fixtures before Newcastle United host Liverpool in the late game. The round closes on Monday night when Fulham face Chelsea, the second London derby of the opening weekend.
Three clubs come up from the Championship this season. Coventry City return to the top flight after 25 years away, Hull City after nine, and Ipswich Town after a single season in the second tier.
Transfer Window Still Open
Clubs enter the season with the summer transfer window still running. It closes at 11pm UK time on 1 September, meaning squads could yet change significantly during the opening weeks of the campaign.
Spending has been heavy across the division. Chelsea have been the most active club in world football this summer, bringing in 12 signings, headlined by Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a deal reported at around £117 million, which stands as a record fee for a British player. Manchester City spent heavily on Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, while Tottenham have added Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke alongside free transfers for Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka.
Several deals remain unresolved heading into the opening round. Manchester United have been working to finalise a move for Carlos Baleba, while Arsenal are pushing to complete a deal for Ezri Konsa. The future of Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez also remains unsettled amid reported interest from Manchester City.
Format and Key Dates
The 2026-27 season consists of 33 weekend rounds and five midweek rounds, concluding on 30 May 2027 with all fixtures kicking off simultaneously on the final day, as is tradition. That end date sits one week before the Champions League final on 5 June.
The international break schedule has been adjusted this season. Rather than three separate one-week breaks in the autumn, there will be one two-week break and one one-week break, with no league fixtures on the weekends of 26 September, 3 October and 14 November. A further break falls on the weekend of 27 March.
This season also brings a change to shirt sponsorship. The Premier League has implemented a ban on gambling companies appearing on the front of matchday shirts, though betting brands can still appear on sleeves, training kits and other club partnerships.
Nine English clubs will compete in UEFA competitions this season, with five in the Champions League, three in the Europa League and one in the Conference League.
